France Clamps down on Israel

France's President Emmanuel Macron has stated that France may sanction Israel if the Israeli government doesn't take action to prevent famine and the humanitarian crisis that has faced Gaza for over a year and a half.  There has been growing international pressure on Israel to take action to alleviate the dire conditions that people in Gaza have been enduring.  Specifically, many have been calling for a lift of the blockade Israel has placed on Gaza, which has prevented aid from entering the strip.  Not surprisingly, Israel has punched back at Macron's comments.  The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed there is no blockade on Gaza stopping aid from reaching people.  This contradicts reports from multiple international organizations, including the United Nations.  Macron also stated that the founding of a Palestinian state would be "not only a moral duty, but a political necessity."  It is not hard to see where Macron is coming from in his statements.

People living in Gaza are facing unacceptable conditions, especially with regards to starvation.  If the Israeli blockade is not lifted soon, even more people will die than have already died in the war with Israel.  Roughly 1 in 5 people in Gaza are faced with the grim reality of starvation.  Beyond this, a so-called humanitarian organization supported by the United States and Israel, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, or GHF, has been widely criticized by international organizations and experts for not providing close to sufficient amounts of aid to help lift Palestinians out of the crisis.  Areas where GHF have positioned themselves have been the center of weak organization and insufficient security.  Palestinians have also been injured by Israeli gunfire near the points where aid is located.  These scenes indicate that there is not a clear resolution for the horrid conditions that men, women, and children endure daily.

It is refreshing to hear Emmanuel Macron call for an end to this humanitarian crisis.  However, the end of it lies solely with Israel.  The Israeli government needs to allow sufficient aid into the Gaza strip, and they need to do so immediately.  If they don't, the prospects of starvation for Palestinians will only increase, and more preventable deaths will occur.  Israel must make the moral decision to commit to a total ceasefire and allow aid to enter the Gaza strip with no restrictions.  The world will continue watching.
